Special stores in which there are, in determined quantities, all the products that the following process may ask, "exposed" so that the handler can select exactly the wanted product.

The production of the previous process of the Supermarket is adjusted using a Kanban system for grabbing and production, which then produce only to replace the pieces taken from the following station.

The Supermarket is the greatest pull instrument, allowing the previous stadium to follow the production of following station.

The Supermarkets are located in the immediate proximity of the supplier process to help this process to maintain a visual contact of the needs and consumption of the customer.

In cases where the product is very personalized, obsolescence is high or is very expensive, it is advisable to use other tools.

In other cases, then, the unpredictability of the product demand at the stage of the process which would include a Supermarket, will cause to have very high supplies in the same Supermarket.

For this reason, in this case you prefer other tools.

In Lean systems, the Supermarket are used to decouple production stages, and it is best to always implement them, and only when the flow is not implementable naturally.

The main reasons of a decoupling with Supermarket are attributable to:

• the resource taken into account is shared between two or more processes, has a very short cycle time, but requires a set-up to serve multiple product families;
• some processes are outsourced and at a significant distance;
• some stations are designed with a too long working lead time or are too unreliable to be directly coupled to other stations in a continuous flow;
• cases that generate a too high division into lots.
