What is Kanban?

KANBAN is a communication tool in the "just in time" production and for the control of the warehouse: authorizing the production or the material handling. The word "kanban" in Japanese means "visual card" or record, and the system was developed by Taiichi Ohno, Toyota.

The Kanban, as an object, is a tag attached to the container of the components on the line, indicating / requiring the delivery or production of a defined quantity.
Originally, the Kanban card noted the need to produce or deliver something, but now there are different signals used for the restore.

Today, KANBAN is a system of information transfer, which ensures that each operating station only produces the required quantity for the following station. It's a production and transfer instruction. In this way, the stock is under control, the production goes up with shipments: the pull system!

The Kanban can also be electronic: re-order systems for the supplier or the production department, which require a certain amount of a given material when the stock falls under a predetermined minimum level.

The authorized quantity by each Kanban is minimal, ideally one piece. The number of Kanban circulating or available for a given object depends on the request and the time required to produce or buy more. This number is usually fixed, and remains unchanged unless request or other circumstances (eg. supplier delivery time) change significantly.
